Live Grenade Exercise Sparked Fatal Fire at CFB Wainwright, Military Confirms
A live-fire training exercise at CFB Wainwright in Alberta triggered a deadly blaze, killing four Canadian soldiers and injuring dozens more.
POLICY WIRE — Wainwright, Canada — A high-intensity training exercise involving live grenades has been identified as the catalyst for a fast-moving brush fire that claimed the lives of four Canadian soldiers at CFB Wainwright this past Saturday.
Defense officials confirmed that the fatal incident occurred while troops were engaged in combat training with live munitions. The soldiers were preparing for an upcoming deployment to Latvia when the blaze erupted at the Alberta-based facility.
Preliminary findings indicate that a munition from an automatic grenade launcher range ignited the grass, leading to an explosion that quickly overwhelmed the area. While military officials initially observed a fire on Saturday morning that appeared to be contained, the situation escalated rapidly during the live-fire drills.
In addition to the four fatalities, dozens of service members were hospitalized following the accident. The incident took place at one of Canada’s largest and most active military installations, which serves as the primary training ground for field forces based in Edmonton.
CFB Wainwright, established in 1940, houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. The military continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
