Macron Moves to Ban Illegitimate Protests Following Violent French Riots
President Emmanuel Macron announces bans on illegitimate protests after severe urban unrest, blaming ultra-left groups for recent riots and looting.
POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that authorities will implement bans on illegitimate protests in the coming days. The move follows a wave of severe urban unrest that shook the nation on October 17, marking some of the most intense violence seen in years.
During a meeting with intelligence officials and senior leadership, the president attributed the recent riots and widespread looting to seditious ultra-left factions and vandals. While the government intends to restrict unauthorized gatherings, officials noted that demonstrations organized by groups such as unions will be offered alternative arrangements.
The government has pledged a massive police presence for upcoming protests scheduled for Saturday. Additionally, authorities have imposed localized curfews for a second consecutive night as the nation struggles to manage the aftermath of the disturbances.
In an address to the nation on Sunday, the president expressed that the country feels both anger and shame. He emphasized the necessity of distinguishing between protesters who hold legitimate demands and those responsible for the violence.
The political landscape has become increasingly polarized, with the government accusing far-left groups of fueling the chaos. Meanwhile, Marine Le Pen argued that French democracy is currently at risk, accusing both the president and the Left of contributing to the instability.
Security concerns remain high as officials investigate the extent of the damage. Two individuals have already been arrested in connection with an arson attack on the Limoges city hall.
