International Criminal Court Awarded Prestigious 2026 EU Sakharov Prize
The European Union honors the International Criminal Court with the 2026 Sakharov Prize for its commitment to human rights and international justice.
POLICY WIRE — Brussels, Belgium — The International Criminal Court (ICC) and its staff have been named the recipients of the European Union’s 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. This honor serves as the bloc’s premier recognition for significant contributions to the defense of human rights.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the selection on Thursday, October 22. During the announcement in the hemicycle, Metsola emphasized that the European Union remains fundamentally committed to the principles of multilateralism and the support of international institutions.
The Sakharov Prize, which commemorates the legacy of Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, has been presented annually since 1988 to those who champion fundamental freedoms. This year’s award specifically acknowledges the court’s ongoing efforts to uphold international law and justice.
The recognition arrives despite significant political pressure, including past threats from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to dismantle the institution. In response to the announcement, the Hague-based court expressed gratitude for the acknowledgment of its work.
