Republican and Democratic Campaign Spending Surges Past Supreme Court Caps
Political committees surpass former spending limits by millions following the U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down federal coordinated caps.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — Political committees from both major parties have dramatically increased their spending following a pivotal Supreme Court ruling that dismantled federal limits on coordinated campaign expenditures.
Since the U.S. Supreme Court abolished restrictions on how political parties coordinate directly with candidates on June 30, 2026, in National Republican Senatorial Committee v. Federal Election Commission, campaign expenditures have escalated rapidly ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
Republican committees have surged past the former spending limits by more than $126 million, while Democratic counterparts have topped previous caps by more than $46 million. The legal challenge successfully argued that previous restrictions on coordinated party spending were hopelessly out of step with the court’s modern approach to campaign finance law and violated the First Amendment.
