Turkey Appoints Sergen Yalcin as New Head Coach After Montella Dismissal
Turkey hires former international Sergen Yalcin on a four-year contract as national head coach, succeeding the dismissed Vincenzo Montella.
POLICY WIRE — Istanbul, Turkey — The Turkish Football Federation announced on Tuesday the appointment of Sergen Yalcin as the new head coach of the national football team. The 53-year-old manager signed a four-year contract approved by the executive board to lead the Crescent Stars.
Yalcin succeeds Italian coach Vincenzo Montella, whose contract was terminated on 9 October. Montella was dismissed following a difficult start to the UEFA Nations League campaign that featured four consecutive defeats to France, Italy twice, and Belgium.
The decision marks a return to a homegrown option for the national side after employing two successive foreign managers. Yalcin takes over the managerial post following previous experience that includes leading Besiktas as coach.
The former international midfielder will immediately take charge of the squad to guide them through their final two matches of the Nations League group stage. The executive board structured the agreement to cover upcoming major international qualification cycles.
