French Mirage 2000D Fighter Jet Crashes in Northeast France, Leaving One Dead and One Missing
A French Mirage 2000D fighter jet crashed in northeastern France during a training flight, killing one crew member and leaving another missing.
POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — A military aircraft accident in northeastern France has claimed the life of at least one crew member, with a second person remaining unaccounted for following a late-night crash.
The incident involved a two-seat French Air Force Mirage 2000D fighter jet carrying two personnel on board, according to confirmations released on Wednesday by the Ministry of the Armed Forces.
Officials reported that the combat aircraft went down on Tuesday evening at approximately 2100 GMT near Rogeville, roughly 20 kilometers northwest of Nancy, while conducting a training mission.
Local witnesses previously reported hearing a loud explosion accompanied by a fireball, which immediately triggered an extensive overnight search and rescue operation in the Meurthe-et-Moselle region.
The ill-fated aircraft belonged to the Nancy-Ochey Air Base, which serves as the home station for the French Air and Space Force’s 3rd Fighter Wing and Fighter Squadron 2/3 Champagne.
The jet’s crew consisted of a fighter pilot and a weapons systems officer, and while one body has been recovered, emergency responders continue their urgent search for the missing second crew member.
