POLICY WIRE — Santa Clara, United States — San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans departed Monday night’s matchup against the Washington Commanders after experiencing a flare-up of Achilles tendinitis.
Evans had been managing the physical setback over the preceding week, which kept him out of practice leading up to the game. Furthermore, he has been playing through two broken ribs, though he was active for kickoff after carrying a questionable designation.
Following the 23-17 victory, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the player dealt with the exact complication that troubled him all week. Shanahan noted that it became too active during the competition, forcing him to the sidelines while evaluation continues for the upcoming week.
The coaching staff does not believe additional testing is necessary, nor do they anticipate a prolonged absence for the wideout. The team travels to face Atlanta on Sunday ahead of a scheduled bye week.
Shanahan explained that managing Achilles tendinitis is a situational reality for the veteran athlete. He expressed optimism regarding a potential recovery throughout the week, emphasizing that the issue nearly sidelined him entirely before limiting his participation to the first half.
Before his departure, Evans hauled in three catches for 94 yards, capping his performance with a 16-yard reception late in the second quarter. He limped off the playing field, spent time stretching his lower leg inside the stadium tunnel, and ultimately headed to the locker room.
Remaining absent for the entire second half, Evans was officially ruled out for the remainder of the evening. The 49ers are already coping with extensive absences within their receiving corps, including Ricky Pearsall, De’Zhaun Stribling, Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, and Christian Kirk.
Christian Kirk could potentially return as soon as next week to bolster the roster. Following a dominant first half featuring 303 total yards and 17 first downs for a 20-3 lead, San Francisco’s offense sputtered with only 72 yards and three first downs in the final two quarters.
Quarterback Brock Purdy addressed the loss of his weapon, calling him one of the primary playmakers essential for drawing defensive attention. While acknowledging the setback, Purdy expressed confidence that supporting members of the offense will rise to the occasion.
A six-time Pro Bowler, Evans surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of his initial 11 seasons in the NFL with Tampa Bay. His previous campaign was restricted to just 368 yards across eight appearances due to separate injuries.
In addition to Evans, the 49ers lost linebacker Luke Gifford to a groin injury and slot cornerback Upton Stout to a shoulder injury during the contest.
