Parents of Oregon School Shooting Victim Launch Legal Probe into Security and Gun Access
Families of victims in the Bend, Oregon school shooting have hired attorneys to investigate safety protocols and how the 16-year-old gunman obtained his weapon.
POLICY WIRE — Bend, Oregon — The parents of a child killed in last week’s tragic shooting at Silver Rail Elementary have retained legal counsel to conduct an independent investigation into the school district’s safety protocols and the circumstances surrounding the gunman’s acquisition of his weapon.
The legal team, led by Bend-based attorney Tim Williams, intends to examine whether adequate active shooter measures were in place and how the 16-year-old perpetrator, identified as Griffin J. John II, obtained the 12-gauge pump-action shotgun used in the attack. While the shooter was not currently enrolled in the district, authorities confirmed he was a former special needs student at the school.
Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook stated that the district has invested significantly in security infrastructure, including fencing, locks, and surveillance, and conducts biannual lockdown drills. Cook emphasized that the district will conduct a thorough internal review to identify potential improvements for student and staff safety.
Law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the firearm was purchased by the shooter’s mother, Shauntai Nickerson. Under Oregon law, minors may possess shotguns if provided by a parent or with parental consent, a legal nuance that attorneys are now scrutinizing to determine if any liability exists regarding the weapon’s origin.
The parents of the victim, Kelik and Lillian Summer, expressed their profound grief in a statement, remembering their five-year-old son as a kind child who loved animals and had simple, joyful dreams for the upcoming holiday season. Classes across the district remain suspended as the community grapples with the aftermath of the violence.
