Remembering Richard Riehle, the versatile character actor celebrated for his roles in Office Space and Glory, who has passed away at age 78.
POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Richard Riehle, a versatile and prolific character actor whose career spanned nearly five decades across television and film, has passed away at the age of 78.
The news was confirmed on Monday by Wright Entertainment Inc., which noted that the actor died on Oct. 15. No specific cause of death or additional details were provided in the announcement, which praised Riehle as an exceptional talent and a man of genuine kindness who frequently supported emerging filmmakers.
Riehle was widely recognized for his ability to portray authoritative figures, though he was equally adept at comedic roles. He is perhaps best remembered by audiences for his performance as the beleaguered product manager Tom Smykowski in the 1999 cult classic Office Space, where his character famously insisted, “I have people skills!”
His extensive filmography included a role as a quartermaster in the Civil War epic Glory, a prison guard in The Fugitive, and an air marshal in Executive Decision. On the small screen, he appeared in the television adaptation of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and made guest appearances on series such as The West Wing. He also maintained a notable presence in the Star Trek universe, with roles in The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise.
Riehle’s path to acting began during his senior year at the University of Notre Dame. After discovering he could complete his degree requirements through a single semester of speech and drama courses, he immersed himself in theater production. This experience led to a teaching assistantship at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts, launching a career that would eventually include three Broadway appearances, including the 1999 revival of The Iceman Cometh.
