Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Holds Unannounced Meeting with Netanyahu in Israel
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an unannounced Israel visit amid regional tensions and upcoming elections.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth conducted an unannounced visit to Israel on Monday, where he held a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to reports from Axios citing two knowledgeable sources.
The Pentagon has declined to provide a comment regarding the trip, and the Israeli embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to inquiries. Independent confirmation of the visit remains pending.
The meeting occurred just eight days before Israel’s upcoming parliamentary election. This vote marks the first national contest since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that triggered widespread conflict across Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.
Current polling suggests that the religious-nationalist coalition led by Netanyahu is at risk of losing its governing majority. However, analysts note that the opposition may also face significant challenges in securing enough support to form a new government.
The timing of the visit follows a public endorsement of Netanyahu by U.S. President Donald Trump. Conversely, U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated in an interview with the digital outlet 2WAY on Monday that he is not involving himself in the Israeli election process.
Regarding his stance on the election, Vance remarked, I endorse American candidates, and that is where I’m focused on is the midterms. He further clarified his position by stating, I’m not anti-endorsing him, but I’m not pro-endorsing him, I’m not getting involved in Israeli elections.
Reports indicate that the discussions between U.S. and Israeli officials have included the potential for resuming major combat operations against Iran. This remains a developing situation.
