Australian Lawmaker Helen Haines Critically Injured in Car Strike
Independent Australian MP Helen Haines suffers critical injuries in a deliberate car attack outside her Wangaratta office. Counter-terrorism active.
POLICY WIRE — Sydney, Australia — Australian independent member of parliament Helen Haines sustained critical injuries on Monday after being deliberately struck by an automobile, according to official statements from authorities.
Law enforcement officials reported that the incident occurred directly outside the politician’s office located in Wangaratta, a municipality situated a little over 200 kilometers, or 124 miles, northwest of Melbourne.
Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason confirmed that the 65-year-old victim sustained critical harm during the violent episode, though police protocols prevented officers from officially naming the individual at the scene.
Bystanders at the location intervened to detain the 43-year-old male driver before police arrived to place him under formal arrest, Superintendent Mason added.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed reporters following the event, expressing that all attention and thoughts remain directed toward the injured official, her relatives, associates, staff, and constituents during this severe crisis while hoping for a complete recovery.
Mr. Albanese noted that investigators have yet to establish a clear motive behind the suspected assault, prompting officials to activate the counter-terrorism squad to handle the inquiry.
Describing the legislator, the Prime Minister stated that Helen Haines is extraordinarily industrious, fiercely intelligent, and fundamentally a thoroughly decent human being.
