US Applauds Israel Over West Bank Settler Arrests Amid Fresh Attacks
US officials praise Israel for arresting ten suspects over West Bank settler violence targeting Palestinians and journalists as new attacks emerge.
POLICY WIRE — Tel Aviv, Israel — Israeli law enforcement authorities disclosed on Monday that 10 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with recent violent assaults directed at Palestinians, an American photojournalist, and European diplomats throughout the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
The detentions follow a wave of sharp international rebukes, including prominent statements from high-ranking American officials, condemning ongoing aggression by predominantly young Israeli settlers against local residents and international figures.
This law enforcement action coincided with fresh reports on Monday detailing additional acts of violence perpetrated against Palestinians residing in the volatile territory.
According to police reports, officers collaborated with the Shin Bet domestic security and intelligence apparatus to launch a pre-dawn operation across the West Bank designed to capture suspects tied to the violence and accused of breaching a military commander decree establishing a closed military zone.
Authorities labeled the sweep Operation Olive Leaf, noting it directly addresses multiple violent incidents involving Israeli settlers harassing Palestinians during the crucial annual olive harvest.
Law enforcement officials confirmed in a formal statement that investigators seized various items connecting the detainees to the alleged crimes alongside the confiscation of multiple vehicles.
The crackdown follows a violent confrontation on Friday that left several Palestinians and Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine injured after a band of masked Israeli men targeted olive harvesters, according to corroborating video footage, eyewitness accounts, and Palestinian officials.
Furthermore, European authorities and the Israel Defense Forces confirmed that a separate diplomatic delegation carrying representatives from France, Belgium, and Poland was accosted by masked assailants on Saturday close to the Palestinian village of Taybeh.
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee took to social media on Monday to characterize the arrests as a very positive development in finding and punishing those who severely attacked and beat Heidi Levine, whom he described as an unarmed journalist.
Earlier over the weekend, Ambassador Huckabee condemned the assault on Levine as an act of terror carried out by masked cowards.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also voiced strong condemnation regarding the attack on the photojournalist on Saturday, emphasizing that President Trump does not wish to witness an escalating crisis unfold within the West Bank.
We have asked the Israelis and continue to ask them to crack down on that stuff, Rubio stated regarding the pressure applied by Washington.
In response to the diplomatic incident, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office issued a Saturday statement urging observers to exercise caution before rushing to judgment concerning the reported assault on European diplomats.
Netanyahu’s administration pointed out that online video clips appeared to depict masked individuals confronting a diplomatic vehicle alongside footage of a shattered car window and an unidentified person lying on the ground, arguing that these snippets alone fail to establish the complete sequence of events or individual responsibility.
While the Israeli military maintained that the diplomatic convoy failed to coordinate its route with defense forces—a step it claimed would have ensured greater safety—authorities did not contest that the delegation was indeed ambushed by settlers.
By Monday, WAFA, the official media agency of the Palestinian Authority which oversees most West Bank Palestinians but holds restricted security jurisdiction, documented fresh settler attacks across the region.
Two separate individuals sustained injuries in the villages of Turmus Ayya and Deir Abu Mash’al, situated northwest of Ramallah, as assailants attempted to torch residential buildings by setting vehicles ablaze directly outside the properties, according to WAFA.
Additionally, the Israeli military reported that late Sunday night, a group of Israeli civilians breached the Palestinian village of Wadi a-Rahim, where they defaced property with graffiti and set fire to a storage shed, prompting the military to begin dismantling an illegal settler outpost in that vicinity.
Human rights and international monitors note that settler violence directed at Palestinians throughout the West Bank has escalated significantly over recent years.
United Nations humanitarian tracking data indicates this hostile surge began accelerating after Netanyahu assumed power in late 2022 leading Israel’s most far-right coalition government in modern history.
These hostile actions have intensified further in the wake of the ongoing war in Gaza, fueled by vocal backing from key members of Netanyahu’s cabinet who openly advocate for settlement expansion and the complete annexation of the West Bank by Israel.
