Macron Rejects Interior Minister’s Resignation Amid Escalating French Protests
President Emmanuel Macron refuses Interior Minister Laurent Nunez's resignation following widespread riots and mounting political pressure in France.
POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — President Emmanuel Macron has officially turned down an offer to resign from Interior Minister Laurent Nunez following a weekend of intense, widespread rioting across the nation. The Elysee presidential office confirmed the decision on Monday, noting that the president expects Nunez to remain in his post to maintain a stable chain of command within the police force.
The ongoing demonstrations have been fueled by deep-seated public frustration regarding the rising cost of living, the deterioration of public services, and concerns over the state of the country’s schools. While Macron publicly criticized the failures that contributed to the violent unrest, he maintained that the interior minister must stay to manage the crisis.
The political situation remains volatile, with more than 2,400 individuals arrested following violent clashes. Amid the turmoil, French National Assembly Deputy Mathilde Panot has issued an ultimatum to the president, demanding that he either resign or face impeachment proceedings.
This development follows a separate incident involving Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who also offered his resignation on Monday after the lower house of parliament rejected a controversial immigration bill. Macron similarly declined to accept that resignation.
