Anthropic Dedicates 5% of Equity to New Public Benefit Fund Ahead of IPO
AI firm Anthropic commits 5% of its stock to a new public benefit fund, signaling a major shift in corporate responsibility ahead of its upcoming IPO.
POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — Artificial intelligence developer Anthropic has announced the creation of a new public benefit fund, pledging 5% of its total stock to the entity. This move aims to provide the company with greater flexibility to support social initiatives, including potential direct distributions to specific populations or large-scale grants to traditional nonprofit organizations.
The company, which is currently preparing for a significant initial public offering potentially arriving as early as November, noted that the rapid evolution of AI necessitates bolder approaches to addressing societal impacts. Anthropic has already committed $200 million toward research regarding the effects of artificial intelligence on the labor market.
CEO Dario Amodei and the firm’s five cofounders established the company as a public benefit corporation to balance financial objectives with social impact. With this latest commitment, approximately 20% of the company’s shares are now dedicated to the public good, with the possibility of that figure increasing should the firm reach specific valuation milestones.
