Brandon Figueroa Withdraws From Kameda Bout Following Title Loss and Illness
Brandon Figueroa pulls out of his Las Vegas fight against Tomoki Kameda after missing weight and falling ill. Get the latest on the WBA title status.
POLICY WIRE — Las Vegas, USA — Brandon Figueroa has officially withdrawn from his scheduled bout against Tomoki Kameda. The decision came on Saturday after the fighter fell ill overnight, effectively removing the contest from the Premier Boxing Champions card in Las Vegas.
The withdrawal follows a tumultuous Friday for the Weslaco, Texas native. Figueroa, who holds a record of 27-2-1 with 20 knockouts, was stripped of his WBA featherweight title after weighing in at 127.4 pounds, exceeding the 126-pound limit by 1.4 pounds.
Prior to the cancellation, the fight was slated to proceed with only Kameda eligible to claim the vacant championship. The WBA has not yet provided an update regarding the future status of the featherweight world title.
Kameda, a former two-division world champion from Japan with a 42-5 record and 23 knockouts, was prepared to challenge for the belt. However, those plans were abandoned following the announcement of Figueroa’s health issues.
