Australia Weighs Selection Options for Second Test Against South Africa
Australia evaluates team selection for the second Test in Gqeberha as they aim to secure the series following a dominant 214-run victory over South Africa.
POLICY WIRE — Gqeberha, South Africa — Australia is currently evaluating its final lineup ahead of the second Test match against South Africa this Sunday. The team aims to clinch the three-match series after securing a decisive 214-run victory in the opening game.
All-rounder Cameron Green remains sidelined due to an abdominal strain. Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis is working to recover from a finger injury in time for the match.
Team management is considering an all-seam bowling attack, a move that could potentially see experienced spinner Nathan Lyon left out of the side. This strategy is being weighed against the possibility of inclement weather during the first two days, which could shorten the match or favor seam-friendly conditions.
Captain Pat Cummins addressed the media on Saturday, stating, We always look at all options. We love playing with Nath. We saw last week, (he took) a couple of key wickets in the first innings. And even the control he gives. It makes the rest of us fast bowlers be able to function around him.
Regarding the batting order, Cummins indicated that Matt Renshaw is expected to remain in the middle order. Renshaw impressed in the first Test in Durban, recording scores of 190 and 82.
“After what Renners did last week, I presume he’ll stay at number five,” Cummins noted. He praised Renshaw’s adaptability, adding, “What he deserved even more credit for is that we’d asked him to do a different role and he just said straight away ‘yep, no worries, whatever the team needs’.”
South Africa currently holds a 4-3 head-to-head record at the Gqeberha venue. Australia has not secured a victory at this location since 1997.
