Russia and Ukraine Establish Ceasefire to Restore Power at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
A local ceasefire brokered by the IAEA allows critical repairs to restore external power lines at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — Russia’s state-run nuclear entity, Rosatom, confirmed that a truce agreement took effect on Thursday to facilitate essential repairs at a thermal power station. This facility provides critical electricity to the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant located in southeastern Ukraine.
The ceasefire, mediated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), aims to restore external power to the site, which has struggled with supply disruptions. The plant, recognized as the largest nuclear facility in Europe, has been under Russian occupation since the early stages of the full-scale conflict.
Following the longest outage since September 23, 2025, the facility had been forced to rely on emergency diesel generators to maintain cooling systems. Repairs to the external power lines officially commenced on October 18, 2025, as part of a phased effort to mitigate nuclear safety risks.
