Somalia Schedules Presidential Election for May 2027 Amid Political Tensions
Somalia's electoral commission sets parliamentary and presidential election dates for 2027, sparking debate amid ongoing political instability in the region.
POLICY WIRE — Mogadishu, Somalia — The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) officially announced on Thursday that the country will hold federal parliamentary elections on April 15, 2027, followed by a presidential vote on May 15, 2027.
The announcement comes as the nation navigates a deeply fractured political landscape. The scheduled polls are set to proceed despite significant concerns regarding mounting instability and an unresolved dispute between the federal government and various opposition factions.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who began his second term in 2022, saw his official mandate expire earlier this year. Although his administration declared a transition period through a constitutional amendment in May, opposition leaders and officials in Puntland maintain that the four-year terms for both the president and parliament concluded in April and May 2026.
The commission confirmed that the upcoming elections will be conducted on a one-person-one-vote basis. However, the unilateral nature of the timetable has drawn criticism from opposition groups, who argue that the lack of political consensus creates a recipe for further conflict.
