UK Hospitality and Retail Giants Launch Massive Hiring Drive for 100,000 Young People
Major UK firms including Tesco and John Lewis pledge 100,000 new jobs for NEET youth to combat unemployment and provide essential career entry points.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — A coalition of prominent UK hospitality and retail businesses has launched an ambitious initiative to generate 100,000 new job opportunities for young people currently outside of education, employment, or training, commonly referred to as NEETs.
This three-year program aims to provide a vital entry point into the workforce for individuals aged 16 to 24. The effort seeks to address the significant scale of youth unemployment, with the Office for National Statistics reporting that approximately 981,000 young people in this age bracket were classified as NEET as of April.
Major industry players, including Tesco and John Lewis, are spearheading the commitment alongside various bars, restaurants, and clubs. These organizations intend to offer placements directly to young universal credit claimants to help them build professional experience and essential workplace skills.
By providing this structured path into the labor market, the participating companies hope to mitigate the long-term impact of youth unemployment. The initiative serves as a collaborative effort to ensure that young individuals receive the support necessary to secure their first step on the career ladder.
