SpaceX Imposes Starlink Speed Caps in Ukraine, Impacting Military Operations
SpaceX has restricted Starlink satellite speeds in Ukraine, disrupting military drone and ground robot operations. Discover the impact on frontline combat.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — SpaceX has implemented new technical limitations on Starlink services within Ukraine, effectively capping the operational speed of terminals at 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). This adjustment has reportedly caused significant disruptions to ongoing military missions.
Presidential adviser Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov confirmed the development on October 14, stating that the restrictions were applied to Starlink terminals while in motion. He noted that these sudden changes have hindered several military operations.
The move follows broader efforts by SpaceX to regulate the use of its satellite network in the conflict zone. Reports indicate that bandwidth limitations are now hampering Ukraine’s ability to deploy ground robots effectively along the frontline.
While SpaceX has not issued a public confirmation regarding these specific military-grade restrictions, the company has maintained a documented 100 mph limit for commercial in-motion plans since March. The current controversy centers on the application of these caps to Starshield terminals previously utilized for high-speed operations.
The situation underscores the growing influence of private satellite providers on modern warfare. Previous measures taken by SpaceX, including those initiated in February 2026, were designed to mitigate threats from Russian drones by blocking unauthorized access to the satellite network.
