POLICY WIRE — Ensenada, Mexico — The death toll from Hurricane Simon and the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel has climbed to six after heavy rains triggered widespread flooding and landslides along Mexico’s Pacific coast, according to local authorities.
The storm system, which moved slowly off the Pacific coast, brought torrential rain to Nayarit and Sinaloa states, where officials remained on high alert for rising river levels and further flooding. In Ensenada, Baja California, floodwaters caused by Rachel’s remnants killed at least five people, including a 13-year-old girl, two women, and a young boy, with one more victim found near a stream.
Rescue teams continue searching for five others who remain missing, including a father and son who vanished while fishing. Military personnel and emergency responders are working to recover bodies and assist affected communities, with some areas cut off due to damaged infrastructure. Meanwhile, Hurricane Simon continues to move along the coast, threatening additional rainfall in several regions.
