Romanian Pro-Russian Ex-Presidential Candidate Faces House Arrest in Fraud Probe
Ex-presidential candidate Calin Georgescu to face house arrest as fraud investigation unfolds. Key details emerge.
POLICY WIRE — Bucharest, Romania — A Romanian court has ordered the transfer of Calin Georgescu, a pro-Russian former presidential candidate, from police custody to house arrest for 30 days while prosecutors investigate alleged fraud tied to the canceled 2024 presidential election.
Georgescu, who once led the race for the presidency, is under scrutiny for his role in a case involving a €1.1 million (approximately $1.26 million) transaction with a Romanian businessman. Authorities allege that he and two others convinced the individual to provide the funds by falsely claiming they could assist in securing business opportunities.
The decision comes after Georgescu was detained earlier this month by Romanian police and the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT). He gained national attention when he unexpectedly secured 23% of the vote in the first round of the November 2024 election, though the contest was later annulled by the Constitutional Court.
