Anthropic Claims New AI Protections Slash Distillation Attacks by 90%
Anthropic reports 90-99% drop in AI model theft attempts. New safeguards target distillation attacks.
POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Anthropic has announced a major breakthrough in protecting its Claude AI models from unauthorized replication, claiming that new security measures have slashed data extraction from distillation attacks by up to 99%.
The company revealed the success of three newly implemented defenses, which significantly hinder efforts by competitors to copy its AI capabilities. These measures were detailed in a research post published on October 12, 2026, and are part of a broader response to rising concerns over AI security amid heightened U.S.-China competition.
Anthropic identified coordinated distillation attacks involving nearly 24,000 fake accounts aimed at stealing Claude’s reasoning abilities. The firm is now sharing technical details with other AI labs and cloud providers, while also developing additional safeguards to further limit the usefulness of stolen outputs without compromising user experience.
