EU Launches New Mission to Support Lebanon’s Security Forces
EU foreign ministers approve mission to aid Lebanon's military and security agencies. Strengthening state institutions amid regional challenges.
POLICY WIRE — Brussels, Europe — The European Union has formally launched a new mission aimed at supporting Lebanon’s security and defense structures. The initiative, approved by EU foreign ministers, seeks to bolster the Lebanese Armed Forces and internal security agencies through advisory and training efforts.
The mission, known as the European Union Support Mission in Lebanon (EUSM Lebanon), is part of the bloc’s broader commitment to reinforcing stability in the region. It comes as Lebanon continues to face significant challenges in maintaining control over its territory and ensuring internal security. The EU emphasized that the effort aligns with its goal of strengthening state institutions and promoting sovereignty in the country.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas highlighted the importance of the mission, stating it would provide critical support to Lebanon’s security forces to enhance their capacity in border protection and internal governance. The move follows discussions about the future of international presence in the region, particularly after the expected departure of UNIFIL in 2027.
