Hurricane Isaias Leaves Devastation in Southeast as Residents Cope with Aftermath
Hurricane Isaias devastates Florida, Alabama, and Carolinas. At least four dead, thousands without power, and tornadoes reported.
POLICY WIRE — Destin, Florida — Hurricane Isaias carved a path of devastation across the Southeast this weekend, making landfall near Destin as a Category 2 storm and leaving behind widespread damage from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the Carolinas.
The storm claimed at least two lives in Florida and two in Alabama, with wind gusts reaching violent levels even 15 miles inland in Milton, Florida. A massive tree fell on a house, catching resident Phyllis Hennebery off guard while she was resting in her room.
Roofs were torn off apartments, and walls were ripped away, leaving many homes unlivable. Over 150,000 Florida residents remained without electricity, along with more than 20,000 in Alabama. Meanwhile, the storm spawned at least eight confirmed tornadoes in Georgia and the Carolinas, including one that stripped a roof from a home nearly 90 miles west of Charleston. In western North Carolina, heavy rainfall caused roads to flood, with over half a foot of rain recorded.
