Top Energy Executives Removed from Riyadh Conference Amid Attack Fears
Major oil leaders excluded from WPC Energy Congress in Riyadh as security tightens after airport attacks. Saudi events proceed despite unrest.
POLICY WIRE — Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — Top energy executives were removed from the agenda of the WPC Energy Congress in Riyadh following recent missile attacks on the capital, which were attributed to Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Despite the violence, the conference proceeded as planned at a different location.
The event had originally scheduled chief executives from major firms such as ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, Shell, Chevron, and BP. However, none of these executives appeared on the updated schedule released by organizers on Monday. The decision came after a series of attacks at the international airport caused casualties and prompted heightened security protocols.
Although BP announced its withdrawal, the five-day conference continued without disruption. Other high-profile energy figures also reportedly stepped back from the event amid ongoing concerns about regional stability. Meanwhile, Saudi authorities maintained that the attack did not compromise the safety of attendees, with additional measures put in place to ensure security throughout the proceedings.
