POLICY WIRE — Bangkok, Thailand — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has highlighted that robust investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure is maintaining global economic growth near 3%, with significant advantages accruing to several Asian nations that provide the hardware for AI systems.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva emphasized that the surge in AI-related spending is acting as a powerful economic driver, particularly benefiting countries deeply involved in global technology supply chains. This includes nations like Thailand, which are playing a central role in supplying the physical components needed for AI development.
According to the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook Update, global growth is expected to remain at 3% in 2026 and rise to 3.4% in 2027. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, the rapid expansion of AI and digital technologies is helping to counterbalance some of these challenges, especially for economies integrated into global tech networks.
