POLICY WIRE — Berlin, Germany — German Labour Minister and centre-left Social Democratic Party co-head Bärbel Bas announced her immediate resignation from both positions on Monday.
Bas stated that she made the decision to step down after the death of her stepdaughter, explaining in a public statement that she needs time to come to terms with her grief.

Alongside her governmental portfolio overseeing major parts of Germany’s welfare system, she has acted as one of two co-leaders of the SPD alongside Lars Klingbeil since 2025.
