China Imposes Sanctions on Paraguay and Belize Officials Over Taiwan Ties
China sanctions Paraguay's communications minister and Belize's foreign minister over diplomatic ties with Taiwan, citing Beijing's territorial claims.
POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — China imposed sanctions on officials from Paraguay and Belize on Monday, targeting the communications minister of Paraguay and the foreign affairs minister of Belize, due to their nations’ diplomatic relationships with Taiwan.
The measures include visa restrictions and bans on financial transactions with Chinese entities. Beijing asserts that Taiwan is an inalienable part of its territory, a stance that has been rejected by Taipei. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that these actions are a response to the ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two countries and the self-governing island.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry urged Paraguay to align with the one-China principle and cut so-called diplomatic ties with Taiwan authorities. The statement emphasized that Paraguay’s relationship with Taiwan is based on democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law, but Beijing continues to view such connections as a challenge to its sovereignty claims.
