POLICY WIRE — Madrid, Spain — Spanish lawyer and former EU trade expert Miriam Gonzalez Durantez has launched a new political party called Democracy21, set to compete in the upcoming general election on November 29. The initiative aims to address growing polarization and promote democratic renewal in Spain.
The party, which will only contest elections in Madrid and Barcelona, was officially presented at an event held in Madrid’s Domo 360 space. It was registered with the Spanish Registry of Parties in June, but the sudden call for early elections by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has accelerated its campaign efforts.
Gonzalez Durantez, who is also the wife of former UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, has positioned Democracy21 as a movement focused on depoliticizing public institutions and introducing greater transparency. She has emphasized the need to counter corruption and complacency within Spain’s political system, drawing inspiration from British governance models.
