POLICY WIRE — SAN ANTONIO, United States — President Donald Trump announced Wednesday night that he would bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom on legendary pitcher Roger Clemens, declaring him “maybe the greatest pitcher of all time” during a campaign rally in San Antonio.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner, known as The Rocket, has long been a subject of debate over his career due to suspicions of steroid use. Despite this, Trump praised Clemens and urged his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, calling it a “big step up from the Hall of Fame.” The president has previously awarded the medal to athletes like Tiger Woods and Mariano Rivera.

Clemens, who was present at the event, expressed surprise and gratitude, stating, This supersedes anything that obviously I’ve done in my playing career. The announcement came amid a long speech by Trump, with the crowd showing mixed reactions. This is not the first time Trump has advocated for Clemens’ recognition, following his previous calls for Pete Rose’s reinstatement in the Hall of Fame.
