Russia Dismisses Epidemic Concerns After Plague Institute Worker’s Death
Russia denies epidemic risk after a plague institute worker dies in Siberia. WHO says outbreak risk is low.
POLICY WIRE — Irkutsk, Russia — Russian health authorities have denied any threat of an epidemic following the death of a laboratory worker at a plague research facility in Siberia, as officials accuse media outlets of spreading misinformation about the incident.
The female technician, who was employed at the Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East in Irkutsk, fell ill and died under undisclosed conditions last week. A local health regulator stated on Wednesday that no epidemic risk exists in the region following her passing.

The World Health Organization has also indicated that the likelihood of an outbreak in Russia remains low, after the sudden death of the lab employee.
