The Los Angeles Police Department is examining the case as a death investigation and has stated there is currently no indication of criminal involvement. Nungarary’s stepmother revealed that he faced ongoing bullying during his time at the school, and a GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover funeral expenses. The Los Angeles Unified School District has sent mental health professionals and grief counselors to the campus to support students and staff.
