POLICY WIRE — Manila, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has accused China of interfering with a critical resupply mission to troops stationed on a World War Two-era warship in the South China Sea, claiming that the actions of Chinese vessels created a high risk of collision and jeopardized Filipino personnel.

According to Jay Tarriela, a PCG spokesperson on South China Sea issues, the China Coast Guard and the People’s Liberation Army Navy engaged in what the Philippines described as an unlawful obstruction of a humanitarian and sustainment operation at Second Thomas Shoal on Thursday. The PCG emphasized that these actions contradict international law and a 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated Beijing’s territorial claims in the region.

The Philippines has called for an end to interference with its lawful resupply missions, while the PCG reiterated its commitment to conducting operations in accordance with its sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the waterway. A provisional agreement between Manila and Beijing in 2024 had previously helped reduce tensions, but recent incidents have reignited concerns over regional stability. The Chinese embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
