Damon Matai Seei, a 34-year-old letter carrier, was arrested and appeared in federal court in Salt Lake City on Tuesday. He entered a not guilty plea during the arraignment. Authorities have not disclosed his motive, but Seei reportedly told investigators there was no political intent behind the act.

The incident occurred when Seei was delivering mail in Eagle Mountain, Utah, and discarded the ballots and other mail into a dumpster at a church parking lot. Most voters in Utah cast their ballots by mail, making this act particularly alarming. The Supreme Court recently rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to impose new rules restricting mail voting for midterm elections.
