The attack occurred at the Old Police Lines complex in Kohat, a city of approximately 220,000 residents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The facility houses critical departments such as the Counter Terrorism Department and the Special Branch.

A local militant group linked to the Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the assault. Fighting continues inside the compound, with several attackers still believed to be holed up in the Special Branch section. Officials have confirmed that more than 100 individuals were hurt, many of them police officers, with some in critical condition.
