POLICY WIRE — Beaver Falls, New York — A high school honors student in upstate New York was sent home on the first day of class after bringing a coffee cup to her classroom.

Julie Kaputa, a senior at Beaver River Central School, was unaware that a new rule prohibiting outside food and drinks had been added to the school’s code of conduct over the summer. She walked into her first-period class with the beverage in hand, only to be told by her teacher she needed to either consume it immediately or discard it.

Kaputa received an in-school suspension for the violation. Her family claims the rule was never properly announced, as it required a public hearing before being implemented. The district’s superintendent acknowledged the oversight and said a new public hearing is scheduled for Monday.
