ADF Militants Kill 33 in Congo, Scattering Ebola Patients in North Kivu
Islamic State-linked ADF fighters killed 33 civilians in eastern DRC, forcing Ebola patients to flee their hospital in a deadly raid.
POLICY WIRE — Beni, Democratic Republic of Congo — A deadly raid by Islamic State-linked militants struck the village of Cantine-Aloya in North Kivu province, resulting in the deaths of at least 33 civilians, local authorities confirmed on Friday.
The attack, carried out on Thursday by fighters affiliated with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), forced patients to abandon a nearby medical facility.
Residents fled in panic as the attackers set homes on fire, leaving the displaced population vulnerable amid ongoing regional instability.
Among those forced to leave were individuals with confirmed Ebola infections as well as five others with suspected cases, according to officials in the Ebola-hit eastern region.
The violence has intensified fears in the area, as militants linked to the Islamic State have returned to the Lubero zone, spreading terror even as health workers grapple with a deadly epidemic.
