POLICY WIRE — Banjarmasin, Indonesia — At least six people were confirmed dead and 130 others remain unaccounted for following the capsizing of a ferry off the coast of Java on Sunday, September 13, 2026.

The Virgo Transport 8, which was en route from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, lost contact with its operators shortly after departure. The vessel had 243 passengers and crew onboard when it encountered severe weather and overturned.

Indonesian search and rescue officials reported that 107 individuals had been rescued, while 213 passengers and 30 crew members were aboard the ship. The national rescue agency, Basarnas, stated the ferry had not yet sunk but was upside down. Authorities are working under dangerous conditions, with waves reaching up to 2.5 meters high.
