POLICY WIRE — Washington, United States — A multi-state salmonella outbreak has been traced back to contaminated broccoli sprouts, according to federal health officials. The illness has affected 22 individuals across multiple states.

The recalled sprouts were distributed to restaurants, grocery stores, co-ops, and food service providers in Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Utah. No fatalities have been reported, but two individuals in Washington have been hospitalized, and the FDA warned that the products may have reached other regions.

The sprouts were sold by Idaho-based Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC, which previously issued a recall for alfalfa sprouts earlier this year after similar outbreaks of salmonella and E. coli. The current recall includes broccoli sprouts packaged in plastic bags or clamshell containers with expiration dates ranging from September 7 to September 16. Consumers are urged to discard any suspected products and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.
