The incident occurred on Monday morning in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, where police were called to Zimran Canas’ home around 10 a.m. local time. Authorities stated that the individual had a mental illness and was carrying a metal pipe, which he later used as a weapon.

Upon arrival, officers were directed to Canas, who was seen holding an 8-foot pole with a 12-inch serrated blade attached. Despite being ordered to drop the tool, he advanced toward an officer with the blade raised, prompting the use of lethal force. The man collapsed and was taken to a hospital, where he later died. No injuries were reported among the officers or others present.
