Canada Accelerates Shift Away from U.S. Trade Dependence as Tariffs Take Effect

POLICY WIRE — Ottawa, Canada — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced plans to accelerate the country’s efforts to reduce its economic dependence on the United States as retaliatory tariffs take effect on $20 billion in American goods.

The move comes after President Donald Trump’s administration imposed new levies on Canadian exports, sparking a broader trade conflict that has strained one of the world’s most integrated economic partnerships.

Carney criticized the U.S. for fostering dependency rather than a balanced trade relationship, saying decades of close integration have left Canada vulnerable. He emphasized the need for faster investment in infrastructure, trade diversification, and stronger ties with more reliable international partners.

He also defended Canada’s decision to retaliate with equivalent tariffs, stating it was necessary to protect domestic industries and workers. The prime minister said the current approach would not escalate tensions but would ensure fair treatment of Canadian businesses in global markets.

The trade dispute has led to increased public support for Carney, with Canadians cutting travel to the U.S. and boycotting American products. However, officials from both nations continue informal discussions, even as formal negotiations remain stalled.
