POLICY WIRE — Primorsky Krai, Russia — The first road bridge connecting Russia and North Korea officially opened on Monday, marking a significant step in the two nations’ growing relationship.

The structure spans the Tumen River and is named after Soviet officer Yakov Novichenko, who is credited with rescuing North Korea’s founder, Kim Il-sung, during a critical moment. The bridge, which is 1 kilometer long with two lanes, allows up to 300 vehicles daily through a newly constructed border crossing point.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin praised the project, stating it would strengthen economic, technological, and cultural exchanges between the two countries. The development comes amid increased cooperation, including North Korea supplying military support to Russia in its conflict with Ukraine and allowing Russian tourists to visit since early 2024.
