The AfD captured 43.8% of the vote in Sunday’s election, more than doubling its support from five years ago in the region. Despite the AfD’s classification as an extremist organization by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, particularly in Saxony-Anhalt, the party’s candidate for governor, Ulrich Siegmund, is seeking support from other lawmakers to form a government.
