Martial Arts Fighter Identified as Victim in Deadly Racist Shooting Near Paris
An amateur MMA fighter has been identified as the victim of a fatal, racially motivated shooting spree that left five others wounded in the Paris suburbs.
POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — The individual killed during a violent shooting spree in the Paris suburbs on Friday has been identified by his athletic club as an amateur mixed martial arts fighter.
The Atch Academy, located in Aubervilliers, confirmed the victim was 26-year-old Pengo Bossio Wangi. In a statement posted to Instagram, the organization honored his memory, describing him as a person of great energy and generosity, while asserting that no circumstance could justify such a loss of life.
French authorities, who have not yet released the victim’s name, reported that the gunman opened fire from a vehicle at three distinct locations across Trappes and La Verrière. The attack resulted in the death of Wangi and left at least five other individuals injured, including a 12-year-old girl.
President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence as a racist terror attack, stating that the victims were targeted specifically due to their perceived religion or skin color. A suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident, and the investigation is now being led by the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s office.
