POLICY WIRE — Fogo Island, Cape Verde — A passenger bus carrying 32 people plunged approximately 30 meters—about 100 feet—into a steep ravine on the volcanic island of Fogo in Cape Verde late Saturday night, killing at least 25 people.

Most of the victims were schoolchildren and teenagers. The crash occurred around 9 p.m. local time along a mountain road near a cliff edge.

Rescuers faced extreme difficulty reaching the wreckage due to the ravine’s steep, treacherous terrain. Harrowing images show the mangled bus at the ravine’s base.

The vehicle was traveling on Fogo Island, one of Cape Verde’s most geologically active islands, when it veered off the roadway and fell vertically into the gorge.
