POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — The United Nations General Assembly voted on Friday to adopt a new global map designed to represent the actual relative sizes of the world’s nations.
More than 160 countries supported the move to transition away from the traditional Mercator projection, a mapping standard that has been in use for nearly 500 years.
The resolution, which was sponsored by African states, seeks to rectify a centuries-old distortion in how the world is visualized.
Critics of the 16th-century Mercator map argue that it exaggerates the scale of northern landmasses while significantly shrinking the perceived size of Africa.
By formally phasing out the old model, the UN aims to implement a version that more precisely displays the true proportions of the African continent.
