Trump Dispatches Kushner and Witkoff to Moscow and Kyiv with Peace Proposal for Ukraine

POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is deploying special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to Moscow and Kyiv to deliver a proposal aimed at concluding the four-year war in Ukraine.

The President confirmed the weekend mission to reporters, stating, They’re bringing with them a proposal to end the war.

While Trump declined to specify if the plan requires Ukraine to surrender territory—a possibility he has mentioned in the past—he noted, “We have an idea for peace.”

The trip marks the first time since Trump’s return to office last year that Kushner and Witkoff will visit Kyiv, though both men have traveled to Moscow previously.

Trump praised the two as “great negotiators” who have already performed well, adding that he sent them to determine if a resolution is possible and that there may be a “good chance” of success.

Regarding the origins of the conflict that began with the February 2022 Russian invasion, the U.S. leader attributed the war to a “personality problem” between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In response to the diplomatic push, President Zelensky suggested a temporary ceasefire during the envoys’ visits to both capitals.

Zelensky stated in an evening address that Ukraine would refrain from airstrikes, provided that Russia reciprocally ensures a ceasefire without its own airstrikes for the duration of the discussions.

Separately, Trump dismissed recent German claims that Russia was responsible for a drone attack attempt on an airport.

Speaking from the Oval Office to an AFP reporter, Trump asserted that he knows Putin very well and that the Russian leader is not seeking to attack NATO territory.
