Trump to Fly $400M Qatari-Donated Jet to Ireland Amid Security Upgrade Delays

POLICY WIRE — Washington, DC — President Donald Trump is scheduled to travel to Ireland next week using the Boeing 747 provided by Qatar, according to a high-ranking White House source speaking with The Independent.

The visit, slated for September 12 and 13, marks the first time the president will use the Qatari aircraft for an international flight since a security incident in July. During a NATO summit in Turkey, U.S. officials secretly switched Trump to a different plane following intelligence reports of a potential threat from Iran.

A senior administration official told The Independent that the government does not comment on specific modifications to Air Force One, but emphasized a consistent posture to ensure the president’s transport remains safe, secure, and reliable.

The decision to fly the fly the jet comes despite Trump’s own comments in July, where he stated the $400 million aircraft would be pulled from service to be maxed out with further security enhancements.

While the White House indicated that work on the jet would begin this autumn and last roughly one month, a start date has not been confirmed. The Washington Post has reported that these upgrades could be pushed back until after the midterm elections in November.

The Boeing 747-8 was donated to the Defense Department by Qatar to serve as a temporary substitute for the aging presidential fleet while Boeing completes two new Air Force One aircraft.

Although the jet has received hundreds of millions of dollars in communications and security overhauls, experts told The New York Times that it may lack the advanced missile defense countermeasures found on older presidential planes.

The broader Air Force One replacement program has been plagued by rising costs and years of delays, with the Government Accountability Office estimating the total price tag will exceed $5.6 billion.

The Air Force maintains that the Qatari jet is suitable for transporting the president, a sentiment echoed by the White House.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung told The Independent that the new Air Force One is a state-of-the-art aircraft utilizing high-level security protocols to protect the president and his staff.

Cheung noted that because many enemies of America are targeting the president, the administration employs every available tool, including misdirection and distraction, to counter those threats.

Critics continue to point out that the aircraft was originally built as a luxury transport for the Qatari royal family rather than a fortified military-grade presidential plane.

The administration intends to eventually transfer the aircraft to Trump’s presidential library following his departure from office in January 2029.

During the upcoming Ireland trip, Trump is expected to meet with Prime Minister Micheál Martin and President Catherine Connolly in Dublin, and visit his Doonbeg golf resort for the Irish Open.

The lack of immediate upgrades may lead to more frequent use of the Qatari jet as Trump increases campaign travel for the November 3 midterms. His schedule includes headlining the GOP convention in Dallas on September 9 and 10, with planned visits to Alaska and other swing states.
