Escalating Bomb Attacks by Mexican Gangs Signal Rising Violence

POLICY WIRE — Mexico City, Mexico — A surge in bomb attacks has recently gripped Mexico, ranging from car bombs to drones equipped with explosives. This escalation in cartel violence has intensified over the past three years, according to local authorities.

The most recent incident took place on Sunday in the central Mexican state of Zacatecas. A suspected car bomb detonated, injuring at least 11 people, including two police officers. The explosion also caused significant damage to approximately 40 buildings, as reported by the state’s governor, David Monreal, on Monday.

Mexico’s major criminal organizations have evolved into decentralized, technologically adaptive entities capable of executing mass-casualty attacks, cross-border intimidation, and sustained coercive violence under increasing enforcement pressure.

By 2025, cartel violence in Mexico had transformed from sporadic criminal brutality to a more organized and hybrid form of violent action. As government enforcement efforts grew, major criminal groups shifted towards becoming hybrid violent actors rather than purely profit-driven organizations. They began employing tactics commonly used by foreign terrorist groups, such as improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and drone-delivered explosives.

Community and human rights groups report that between 800 and 1,000 families have been displaced from their homes in the mountains of central Mexico due to attacks by criminal mafias using homemade explosives launched from drones and powerful weapons.

Mexico’s drug trafficking organizations have been engaged in a decades-long campaign of violence that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and destabilized governance across large regions of the country.

Since last year, CIA operatives within Mexico have reportedly participated in deadly attacks on several mid-level cartel members.
